ROOM & NARRATIVE

- THE PAINTING

NAME: Girl at The Sewing Machine
ARTIST: Edward Hopper

NARRATIVE

On a sunny monday morning, she constantly stares at the concrete walls outside the window in a typical Manhattan apartment, her husband just left for work, she ponders what to do after this sewing work.

The ROOM

The room is to be designed to keep the young house wife busy during the day when there is no one at home, a series of activities would keep her occupied so that there is hardly any time for her to sorrow for the loneliness and monotony.

- My purpose for the design is to focus on the activities that a house wife could do during the day, for instance, washing, cleaning, cooking, sewing, and reading. etc.

- Having considered that she lives in a New York city style apartment, the amount of space and source of natural sun light would become a major issue in designing the space.

- The rooms are to be joined harmoniously by a series of rhythmic external stairs and bridges as circulation. Thus, the notion is to travel from one space to another through exposing yourself to the outside environment, such a device would naturally provokes a mood exchange as a result of physically changing position.

- For example, On a cold winter afternoon, she has just finished washing the clothes and wants to hang them outside, as she walks through the external circulation, she feels cold, she looks at the cold concrete wall of other buildings make her want to rush back to her warm and calm space.

- Perhaps on a sunny summer day, she might love to spend more time outside than inside, she glazes the fascinating city streets and buildings as if she is part of it, she just could not get enough with the metropolitan lifestyle.
